This week we have just been made aware of a useful on-line dataset that has been made available by the Alcohol Learning Centre. The dataset is a classification system that allocates individual postcodes to one of 13 types based on their characteristics and propensity to be at risk of harmful levels of drinking. It’s based on ACORN (similar to Mosaic), but specific to a particular theme.
You’ll need to register to get access to the information available but it is possible to get access to raw individual postcode data along with background notes and there is also some analysis at District/Locality/Ward/SOA level.
The dataset is designed for a specific purpose – to identify where and how to target alcohol awareness campaigns but the Observatory hopes to be able to use it more widely in other areas of analysis e.g. Quality of Life, Needs Assessments and Crime and Community Safety Strategic Assessments.
