NHS Atlas of Variation in Healthcare published

The NHS Atlas of Variation in Healthcare – ‘Reducing unwarranted variation to increase value and improve quality’ has today been published by the Right Care Programme of the NHS.

The Atlas contains a series of 34 healthcare ‘maps’ which look at a wide range of medical conditions including stroke, heart disease, asthma and mental disorders.

The Atlas presents a series of maps of variation selected from the topics which National Clinical Directors from the Department of Health and others have identified as being of importance to their clinical specialty. The aim is to put variations in activity, expenditure, quality, outcome, value, and equity firmly on the health service agenda for the next decade, and to stimulate the NHS to search for unwarranted variation and, by extension, to tackle the causes and drivers of that variation.

The Right Care Programme will launch an interactive version of the NHS Atlas, in 2011.
